Assigning Spaces to Components

Upon IFC Export, components such as doors, windows, furniture, fixtures, and equipment are automatically assigned to the spaces they are located in. If a component is not in any space, a message is displayed in the Message Center providing information about the component’s datagroup catalog item name, the design file and model name, and item ID. For example, the message center displays the following information for these components that are not in any space:

IFC: Chair | Club Upholstered-1513 is not in any space: 0, TestCOBie.dgn, Design Model: 12903.
IFC: Sink | Lavatory Wall Oval is not in any space: Wall Hung Lavatory Oval Bowl: 0, TestCOBie.dgn, Design Model: 11671.
IFC: AL | Double Hung is not in any space: Double-Hung Window: 0, TestCOBie.dgn, Design Model: 10140.

On the Component worksheet, in the COBie spreadsheet, n/a is displayed in the Space column for components that are not in any space.

Components that are not in any space can be assigned to one or more spaces by adding the space name(s) or number(s), comma-separated, in the Assigned Space(s) property value field (shown in the image below). This may be necessary for components that are below the space shape; or for windows and doors that are located on the outside face of walls, and which are wider than 2 feet or 600 mm.
